The city, not the postcard
Our patch is the city itself: the centre and the Backs, but much more of the time Mill Road, Romsey, Petersfield, Chesterton, Arbury, King’s Hedges, Cherry Hinton, Trumpington, Newnham and the newer neighbourhoods on the southern edge. Cambridge is a small city with a very tight housing market and a lot of building going on in and around it, and the consequences of that turn up in the planning register long before they turn up on the street.
Who is responsible for what
Cambridge City Council: planning, bins, housing, licensing, car parks. Cambridgeshire County Council: roads, schools, social care. Getting this right is half of being useful, so we name the authority in every story and link to its own record of the decision.
What we work from
The city council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Cam, and company filings in The Gazette. Where a record is unclear we say it is unclear rather than filling the gap.
What may change
Local government in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is under review. A consultation on four options closed in March 2026 and no decision has been announced, though most of the options submitted would put the city together with the surrounding district in a single authority. We will report what the published documents say when there is something to report, rather than what people expect.
